Luckily, I have a professional artist, Nicoy, who’s done most of the book covers for Flash Renegade. So I’m fine with those as they are.
However, these books still won’t be published as of yet.
I kind of wish I could go back and revise the older book covers. Like the ones for both Nightmarish Reality and Nightmarish Revelations. My perfectionism is kicking in again. I keep thinking I could do this better or make this part a little sharper, etc.
If I do this, I’d have to hire a professional. Of course, it would cost me something. It would be more expensive and I do fear that the original cover with the portal would be lost in translation. Meaning if I revise something that isn’t broken, I might make it even worse.
In fact, I still love the two book covers for Nightmarish Reality and Nightmarish Revelations. But I’m always going back and thinking that I could improve more. What would they look like if I had hired a professional, who uses just stock images? I’ve tried to look at some of the images of portals and eyes, but none of them seem to come close to the design that I created.
I used only Photoshop and Illustrator, since I have experience. I did actually take some digital media classes, but I never followed through with the program and never got a certificate. I could’ve finished it, and yet I didn’t want to. Wasn’t my thing really.
My book covers are eye-catching and unique, that’s for sure. I don’t think I’ve seen anything similar before, so matching that same kind of quality would be kind of tough. I want them to look different from regular horror books. Give them a dark, experimental feel. Although, some people may not like them because they look amaterish, I think they’re beautiful.
I did put in a lot of work into them and revised them a hundred times, even asking friends their opinions on what they liked or didn’t like. Wish I could’ve done more on the text and find something that’s not so…how should I say this? Lackluster? or plain?
At least it’s readable, but it’s killing me to think that maybe if I had a little extra money, I could’ve bought some cool looking font sytles or textures to go with the design itself.
Anyway, we’ll see what happens in the future.
Time will only tell.
